InterNetNews (INN)

Giganews Usenet History > 1991: InterNetNews (INN)

InterNetNews, colloquially known as INN, was developed in 1991 by Rich Salz and presented to the public at the San Antonio, TX Usenix conference in the summer of 1992. INN was the first news server package to completely integrate the NNTP protocol.

Unlike previous news servers, INN is a continuously running process that actively receives, files, and distributes Usenet content. Rich Salz maintained INN until 1996 and handed the project over to the Internet Systems Consortium, where it is still being actively developed and maintained. INN is currently the most commonly installed Usenet server package.
