VyprDNS – Encrypted, Zero-Logging DNS Now Available!

Thursday, May 15, 2014

Golden Frog just announced VyprDNS, their encrypted, zero-logging DNS available for Giganews members with VyprVPN. Golden Frog developed VyprDNS to increase privacy for VyprVPN users and to defeat censorship across the world. VyprDNS is included with Platinum and Diamond accounts and enabled by default in the VyprVPN apps or via manual OS setup.

How does your DNS affect you?

A DNS server translates hostnames (such as www.giganews.com) into a computer readable IP address (216.196.101.133) so your computer can communicate with the desired host and connect to the website. Internet users typically rely on their ISP’s DNS servers or a 3rd party DNS. These 3rd party DNS servers frequently censor websites, log a complete record of your Internet activity and redirect your requests to pages with ads – even if you use a VPN.

Why use VyprDNS?

  • Defeats censorship via DNS man-in-middle-attacks or filtering
  • Zero-Logging
  • Superior DNS geolocation
  • Never redirects your DNS requests to pages with ads

VyprDNS is built into VyprVPN. When you connect to VyprVPN, you are automatically using VyprDNS. No app updates, or action is required to use VyprDNS. Please note, VyprDNS cannot be used separately from VyprVPN.

See how VyprDNS offers superior privacy and freedom »

Read Golden Frog’s infographic on “The Hidden Dangers of DNS” and how VyprDNS defeats them.

To start using VyprDNS, you must have an active Platinum or Diamond account with VyprVPN. VyprDNS is enabled by default in the VyprVPN apps or via manual setup. If you don’t have VyprVPN you can upgrade to a diamond account today and experience VyprDNS for yourself. Defeat censorship, prevent DNS logging and restore your online freedom today.

How Does Heartbleed Affect Giganews Customers?

Wednesday, April 9, 2014

With the recent announcement of the Heartbleed Bug, many customers have asked if Giganews’ services were affected and whether customers need to take any action. Rest assured all Giganews services are currently safe from the Heartbleed Bug. VyprVPN and the Giganews website have not ever used SSL libraries vulnerable to the TLS heartbeat exploit. Golden Frog patched Dump Truck’s SSL libraries on April 8, 2014, and new SSL keys for the service were generated and deployed successfully. However, due to the nature of the bug, we still recommend all customers change their password, especially if you have used Dump Truck. Change your password »

Are Giganews Customers using VyprVPN Apps Safe from the Heartbleed Bug?

Golden Frog’s apps use OpenSSL 1.0.1e, which is vulnerable to the Heartbleed Bug, for OpenVPN connections. However, even though the apps use a vulnerable version of OpenSSL, customer information is not at risk. To be compromised, the apps would need to connect to servers that send malicious heartbeat packets. VyprVPN apps only connect to VyprVPN servers, which do not send malicious packets. Even if the VyprVPN apps were somehow tricked into establishing a connection with a malicious server, the apps do not possess any information they are not already sending to the server. There is nothing a malicious server could gather from the client that it wouldn’t receive anyway.

Golden Frog will be preparing updated versions of the apps that use non-vulnerable versions of OpenSSL, but at this time, Giganews customers are not at risk using the existing versions of the apps.

What is the Heartbleed Bug?

The Heartbleed Bug is a bug in OpenSSL’s implementation of the TLS heartbeat extension. When exploited, it allows an attacker access to the contents of the SSL server and client memory. This memory may include the SSL keys, the content of the data traversing the connection, and usernames and passwords transmitted or stored within the memory of the client and server. Because of the complete compromise of the SSL session and secret key data necessary to keep communications secure, this is considered an extremely critical bug. A full overview can be found at http://heartbleed.com/

What Action Do I Need to Take?

If you have used Dump Truck we highly recommend you change your password. To change your password visit this page: https://www.giganews.com/controlpanel/userpass.html

  • Log in to your Control Panel
  • Click Change Username / Password

Automatic Connect on Wi-Fi and Cellular networks now available!

Thursday, March 6, 2014

Public Wi-Fi hotspots at coffee shops, airport and hotels have become increasingly insecure. Cellular networks also share similar security concerns. Even worse, cellular carriers are also leveraging Wi-Fi to carry smartphone traffic in order to alleviate cellular network traffic, compromising mobile communications. However, users are sometimes too busy or forget to turn on VyprVPN when accessing insecure Wi-Fi and cellular networks. Our partner Golden Frog wants to make it easier for users to protect themselves, so that’s why they added the automatic connect on unknown Wi-Fi and cellular settings into the 2.3 versions of the Android, Windows and Mac apps. Unfortunately, due to iOS restrictions, Golden Frog is not able to offer the automatic connect settings for the VyprVPN for iOS app at this time.

VyprVPN Automatic Connect options include:

  • Connect on Unknown Wi-Fi Networks – When a user connects to an unknown Wi-Fi network, VyprVPN will automatically connect and encrypt all Internet traffic. Users may also exclude specific, “known” networks they consider to be secure and don’t want VyprVPN to automatically connect.
  • Connect on Cellular – When a user is connected to a cellular network, VyprVPN will automatically connect.
  • Automatic Reconnect – Anytime VyprVPN is disconnected without the user manually choosing to do so, the app will attempt to reconnect.
  • Connect When App Starts – VyprVPN will automatically connect when a user opens the app
  • Connect When Device Starts – VyprVPN will automatically connect whenever the device is turned on

Please read the change logs for Windows, Mac, and Android for additional VyprVPN 2.3 updates.

How to Update to VyprVPN 2.3?

Existing users of VyprVPN for Windows and Mac will receive an update notification in the app from which they can install the update. Existing users of VyprVPN for Android can update via Google Play

If you don’t have VyprVPN and want protection for your internet connection while at home or on the go, upgrade to Diamond or Platinum get VyprVPN included for free! If you’re not already a Giganews member, we invite you to sign up for a 14-day free trial.

New Chameleon™ VPN Protocol Defeats VPN Blocking

Thursday, January 30, 2014

Access an unrestricted Internet with Golden Frog’s new technology

Our trusted partner Golden Frog just released Chameleon, their latest innovation that’s making news globally! In recent years there’s been growing concerns worldwide about VPN protocols being inspected, throttled and blocked by governments, corporations and ISPs via deep packet inspection (DPI). To counter this, Golden Frog’s engineers have developed a remarkable new VPN technology called Chameleon that is available in the VyprVPN apps for Windows, Mac and Android.

Chameleon scrambles OpenVPN packet metadata to ensure it’s not recognizable via DPI, while still keeping it fast and lightweight. Chameleon technology uses the unmodified OpenVPN 256-bit protocol for the underlying data encryption. The result is that VyprVPN users are able to bypass restrictive networks put in place by governments, corporations and ISPs to achieve an open internet experience without sacrificing the proven security for which OpenVPN has long been known. Chameleon helps you experience a truly open and uncensored Internet.

Benefits of Using Chameleon

Chameleon is proven to help users that live in or travel to countries such as China, Russia, Turkey, Iran and Syria by preventing blocking. Chameleon is also ideal for users worldwide experiencing VPN blocking and speed issues related to bandwidth throttling.

  • Defeat VPN Blocking via Deep Packet Inspection
  • Resolve Speed Issues Due To Bandwidth Throttling
  • Bypass Censorship Anywhere in The World

How to Access Chameleon:

Chameleon is included in Giganews Diamond accounts at no extra cost. Upgrade to a Giganews Diamond account today or if you don’t have a Giganews account, sign up risk free for a 14-day free trial. Currently Chameleon is only compatible with Windows, Mac and Android devices. Due to iOS-related VPN restrictions, Chameleon is not currently available for VyprVPN for iOS. Detailed set-up instructions are included in the Chameleon FAQ document.

If you’ve already tried Chameleon, Golden Frog would love to get feedback on how Chameleon has helped you.
